Set Up Dial-up Networking For Win 98
Microsoft's Windows 98 provides the Dial-Up Networking software to simplify connection to a full internet access package. This allows the client to use browser programs such as Netscape Navigator, and Internet Explorer.
The instructions that follow are for Dial-up Networking for Windows 98. Directions are as follows .....
Set Up Dial-up Networking For Full Internet Access (Win 98)
- Close all windows except for the Main Windows 98 Screen.
- Click twice on the My Computer icon to open the My Computer window (shown below).

- Inside My Computer is a folder called Dial Up Networking. If you don't have this folder then you need to install it first ... separate problem.
NOTE:If you do not understand or need clarification, then telephone the BSNL Call centre (1500 or 1957) and have them step you through the process.
- Click twice on the Dial-up Networking icon to open that window (shown below).

- If this is the first time you have used Dial-Up Networking, the Welcome To Dial-Up Networking Wizard appears. If the wizard does not appear, double click the Make New Connection icon (shown above) to open the Make New Connection Window (shown below).
It will prompt you for a Name for the connection, type BSNL into that space. Look downwards and you will see a section marked as Select Modem. Is the modem in that space the one that is in your computer? (by default it is) Click once on the Next button.

- The next Make New Connection window will open up and prompt you for the Area Code (080) and the Telephone Number (172222(Postpaid-netone) or 172233(Prepaid-Sancharnet) ) and the Country Code (India). Once you have entered those, click once on the Next button.

- The next Make New Connection window (shown below) will open up and congratulate you on the creation of a new dial up networking connection. If you are happy with this then click once on the Finish button. This will close the Make New Connection window and return you to the Dial-up Networking folder.

- Back in the Dial Up Networking window there will be a new icon called BSNL (shown below).
Click once on the new icon BSNL to highlight it. Then click once with the Right Hand mouse button to open a small box that will list several choices. The one you should scroll down and click on is Properties.

The Properties window will open up with the General tab showing.It will list a variety of information (Area Code, Telephone Number and Country Code) check that these are correct. Just below the Country Code is a line of text which reads Use Country Code and Area Code with a small box that should have a check mark in it.
Check to see if the Connect Using area shows your modem. If all of this is ok then proceed.

- Click once on the Server Types tab at the top of the Properties window. The Properties window will open up with the Server Types tab showing. (shown below)
The settings in this window should match those shown below.

- Click on the TCP/IP Settings button(shown above) and the TCP/IP Settings window will open (shown below).
The settings in this window should be EXACTLY as shown below. Do not attempt to configure using hard (numbered) IP addresses unless you are a Certified Network Engineer. When your settings match these, continue by clicking the OK button which will close the TCP/IP Settings window and return you to the Properties - Server Types window.

- Click once on the Scripting tab of the Properties window. If you don't have a Scripting tab then skip this step as we were just going to clear it out anyway. The Properties window will open up with the Scripting tab showing. (shown below)
There should be nothing in the Script File - Filename box. The small box beside the text reading Start Terminal Screen Minimized should have a check mark in it.

- Click once on the Multilink tab of the Properties window. If you don't have a Multilink tab then skip this step as we were just going to clear it out anyway. The Properties window will open up with the Multilink tab showing. (shown below)
There should be a DOT in the circle beside the statement Do Not Use Additional Devices If all of this is as it should be click the OK button to close the Properties window.

- Now you will be back in the Dial Up Networking Folder. Click once on your BSNL icon to highlight it.(shown below)
Then click once on the Connections menu and scroll down to the Settings choice and click once on it. A Dial-Up Networking window will open.

- Once the Dial Up Networking window is open. (shown below) Change all of the settings to match those shown. Actually most of the default settings are correct.
Once the settings are correct, click once on the OK button to close it and return to the Dial-Up Networking folder.

- Now you will be back in the Dial Up Networking Folder. Click twice on your BSNL icon to start the connection to the Edmonton Community Network's Server. (shown below)

- The Connect To - BSNL window will open. (shown below)
You will type loginid in the space beside Username, where the loginid is YOUR LOGIN ID. Remember this MUST be entered in lowercase letters ONLY.
You will type your password in the space beside Password.
If you have the option to Save Password (small blank box beside that text) click once with the mouse pointer on this box to put a check mark there. If you cannot put a check mark there, it probably means that you have more than one account in Dial Up Networking and this function is disabled.
Check to make sure that the Telephone Number is 172222 for netone user(postpaid) and 172233 for sancharnet user(prepaid)

- To disable Call waiting since it may cause disconnection to occur when a call comes Lift the Handset and Dial 119
- Once you have opened Connect To - BSNL window Click once on the Connect button to connect to BSNL Internet Network.

- Your modem should dial out and talk to our modems and then you will get a message of "Connected At" whatever is the speed the modems are talking at and you are now connected to the BSNL Internet Network. Start your internet browser program now.
